Potenza S001 RFT

Bridgestone’s Next Generation Run Flat tyre – the Potenza S001 RFT delivers a new level of ride comfort that redefines our understanding of Run Flat Technology.

Drivers can now experience the confidence that comes with Run Flat tyres while enjoying all the comforts of a premium performance tyre.

The Challenge

The ability of conventional Run Flat Technology tyres to be driven on after losing air pressure is achieved primarily through a reinforced sidewall.

This thicker sidewall prevents the tyre from collapsing, so it can continue to support the weight of a car with zero air pressure.

A consequence of the reinforced sidewall is that, when inflated, Run Flat tyres deliver a slightly stiffer drive than conventional tyres.

A thinner sidewall would solve this, but doing so would cause the sidewalls to overheat in Run Flat conditions, weakening the reinforcing rubber - effectively cancelling the benefits of RFT.

The Innovation

To overcome this limitation Bridgestone introduced two new heat-suppressing technologies to the design of the Potenza S001 RFT.

Nano Pro–tech™
To combat heat generation from within the tyre, Bridgestone utilised Nano Pro-Tech™ to develop a new rubber compound for the reinforced sidewall.

By optimising the distribution of carbon molecules and minimising the friction between them, this new rubber compound reduced heat generation significantly.

Cooling Fin technology
To suppress heat generation on the outside of the tyre, Bridgestone introduced protrusions (fins) along the tyre wall exterior.

These fins disrupt airflow, directing cool air downwards towards the tyre’s surface.

The Results

Through these innovations Bridgestone was able to develop a thinner sidewall for the Potenza S001 RFT, without compromising its Run Flat durability.

From a ride comfort perspective the positive effects of the thinner sidewall are significant.

Across every performance indicator the Potenza S001 RFT easily surpasses its predecessors, delivering results that rival its conventional S001 counterpart.

When comparing the Next Generation Potenza S001 RFT to conventional Run Flat tyres, Ken Gratton of Carsales.com.au said
