Geraldton Local Receives National Recognition

Bridgestone Tyre Centre Geraldton owner Shane Hay has received national recognition from Bridgestone after stripping off his chest hair in search of a cure for blood cancer.

Shane raised more than $3,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation this year through his participation in the World’s Greatest Shave.

In acknowledgment of this exceptional contribution, he was presented with the Corporate Social Responsibility Award at the recent Bridgestone Family Channel Conference in Fiji.

A quiet achiever, Shane said the win came as a complete surprise. “I didn’t expect it at all, but when I found out I’d won I was pretty chuffed,” he said.

“I didn’t do it for the recognition but it was nice to receive an award all the same.”

Shane has worked at the Bridgestone Tyre Centre outlet in Geraldton for 20 years, owned it for seven, and is a well-known member of the local community.

The idea to wax his chest came about by accident, when Shane jokingly challenged his office staff to raise $1,000 – a feat they managed with ease.

“I couldn’t believe we raised as much money as we did, but our customers really got behind me,” Shane said.

“They were more than happy to see me go through a bit of pain in support of a worthy cause.”

Finding a cure for blood cancer is a cause Shane is passionate about, and he’s already preparing for the World’s Greatest Shave 2015.

“Getting waxed wasn’t as bad as I thought but I probably wouldn’t do it again!” Shane said. “My chest hair’s come back with vigour but I’m growing my beard so I can shave that off next year instead.”

“All money raised will go to the Leukaemia Foundation, funding vital research to help find better treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.”

Bridgestone’s Group General Manager Retail and Marketing, Heath Barclay, said Shane’s efforts were commendable. “Giving back to the community is an important part of who we are and what we do here at Bridgestone,” Heath said.

“Every year people like Shane make outstanding contributions to society, and their efforts deserve to be recognised.”

“Shane’s fundraising efforts caught our attention because he was willing to step out of his comfort zone and do something a bit different, going above and beyond to support the work of the Leukaemia Foundation.”
